If you missed Ken Burns’ documentary THE WAR, you missed much. The initial run of the series on PBS ended tonight, but will be running again over the coming weeks. It’s also available at Amazon.
Chrissy and I solemnly watched a good portion (60% or so) of the seven part series last week and this week. Aside from the factual history lesson (which was the best we had had on the subject), it was a great lesson on the enormous sacrifice that the whole generation endured–it’s often called “the greatest generation.” One thousand veterans of that war are dying every day. Thank one of them for their part.
The series chronicles the bravery, valor, fear and honor that drove America’s boys to do what can barely be understood. They fought a war of ideals and more than 400,000 of them gave their lives to continue our nation’s freedom.
Many years earlier, President John Q. Adams wrote this admonition to us, “Posterity, you will never know how much it has cost my generation to preserve your freedom. I hope you will make good use of it.”
