Chrissy and I have a girl’s name picked out. Since we are planning on a boy per usual, a girl name sort of sits behind the glass with the little hammer hanging by a chain. It will be a genuine, 5-alarm emergency if we need to go to girl prep mode. Yikes. It will be like introducing a new species to a island; you can never imagine what might happen [actually it reminds me of this story]. A little girl in this house would be dramatic.
A few months ago, I did meet a very kind pastor who assured me that when his little girl was born into his house with five or six boys, their world was radically altered in a wonderful way. I’m going to need to take him to lunch to get the full scoop.
Anyway,we are all out of boy’s names. We want our boys to have names that are:
- Unique but not zany, and
- Important because they…
- Mean something important, or
- Remind us of someone we love, or
- Remind us of someone we want our boys to emulate
- And are fully masculine
Then there are minor points such as syncopation/flow, not preferring alliteration with last name (or we would jump on the name Bradford) and ease of shortening.
So far, we have named a Karsten Micah, Haddon Elliot, Lincoln Gabriel, and Knox Carter. Since we are planning on having a boy, we would love your help. Due date is currently July 30th.
I received some good input on FaceBook. Feel free to duplicate your answers here if you so wish. Oh, and you know I am a sucker for the Pilgrims and Puritans, so have fun reading, but not suggesting, names from the following list.
Such a fun dilemma! The boy name that I currently like is ‘Archer’. It’s my mom’s maiden name & I think it’s unique but not weird, masculine, & easy to shorten. But so far when it’s been mentioned, no one elselikes it for a first name but me. Here’s another one for you: Lorenzo Armanus. For reals, that was Mike’s grandpa’s name. Yikes!
Have fun making your choices!

Jackson Steven (after the general and my dad – change the spelling to the martyr stephen?) We were happy to find a cool name you all hadn’t used yet. Love it more now than we did then. The kids read a story in Veritas Press Phonics Museum about “Rockwall” Jackson. (had not learned long vowels yet- hence the change) Great man in the faith. But…good luck. We’re thankful we’ve got a girl on the way or we’d be stuck too.
We had Elliot on our boy’s list, but I see you’ve already used that one. How about Lee, Jefferson, or Stonewall, now that you live in the South?
Charles Haddon,
Edward Jonathan
Whitfield
Harrison
Calvin or John Calvin
Martin
I like Bradford (not for any of my own kids)
How about
Dietrich
Jehu or
Amaziah
Here are a few ideas. Try them in different combinations.
Silas
Winston
Sebastian
Clarke
Lewis
I simply have one request. Pick any name you want other than…Ian. Please, please, please, don’t take Ian. Don’t like it, walk away from it, leave it alone. All of my friends have taken all of my favorite boy names and it’s all I’ve got left. So name a boy anything, but not Ian. Thank you.
I like Jackson Carter.
However, I really miss “Boomer”. Seems like you outgrew it too quickly!
Are you not telling us the girl name?
Love you guys.
Grammie Pam
We aren’t being too secretive about a girl’s name, but will probably make it public after an ultrasound tells us if it is a girl.
All the proper authorizations have been secured (since the name includes two family names). =)
When is your ultrasound?
Let’s see….here’s what we’ve named our boys:
Nolan Donald
Gideon David
Haddon Edwards
Jamison Tyndale
and then our girl…Payson Deborah
If Paysie had been a boy, the name would have been Payson Baxter. Edward Payson was a preacher from New England who was heavily influenced by Jonathan Edwards and had the nickname of ‘Praying Payson’. He was father to Elizabeth Prentiss (hymn/book write).
If we ever had any more, I would have such a hard time figuring out a name…although Simeon was once on our list!
